BasiGo is a green tech startup based in Kenya that is transforming the face of public transportation by deploying modern electric buses alongside an innovative “Pay-as-you-Drive” financing model. This pioneering initiative in Africa enables bus operators to transition to zero-emission vehicles without incurring the high upfront investment typically required.
From its early operations, BasiGo has proven the effectiveness of its model, helping reduce more than 1,700 tons of CO₂ emissions while improving operational performance and urban air quality. To date, the startup has deployed 55 electric buses, received over 800 pending orders, and generated nearly USD 900,000 in revenue in 2024 alone.
With a goal of putting 5,000 electric buses on Kenyan roads by 2030, BasiGo is steadily expanding its operational capacity, building charging infrastructure, and developing a comprehensive support supply chain. The model is not only well-suited for African cities but also scalable to other countries aiming for sustainable urban mobility.
In 2024, BasiGo successfully raised USD 42 million in funding, including USD 24 million in Series A equity and USD 17.5 million in debt from British International Investment (BII) and the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
At the P4G Summit Vietnam 2025, BasiGo showcased its electric bus model and pay-as-you-drive solution in the dedicated startup exhibition area, with the support of the National Startup Support Center (NSSC). The model attracted strong interest from international organizations due to its potential for emissions reduction, support for public transport decarbonization, and scalability across emerging cities.
With a clear growth strategy, measurable results, and long-term vision, BasiGo is emerging as a leading green mobility innovator in Sub-Saharan Africa, helping to shape the future of urban transportation in developing economies.
