Buyo Leading the Future of Sustainable Materials

Champion TECHFEST Vietnam’s National Innovation Technopreneur Contest 2023 organised by National Startup Support Center of VietNam (NSSC) and Startup Vietnam Foundation (SVF).

Buyo is at the forefront of sustainable innovation, offering fully biodegradable materials derived from organic waste, primarily brewers’ spent grain. Designed to decompose entirely within a year, Buyo’s products provide a safe and environmentally responsible alternative to conventional plastics while significantly reducing carbon emissions. Through its proprietary technology, the company transforms food industry byproducts into composite materials for packaging, films, cutlery, pallets, and bottle caps. Additionally, Buyo is advancing a fermentation-based approach that utilizes residual nutrients to cultivate bacteria capable of producing biodegradable materials without the need for blending, opening new possibilities for high-tech applications such as medical use. By addressing one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, Buyo aims to provide a comprehensive solution to plastic pollution.

As the global economy shifts towards green recovery and circular sustainability, regulatory restrictions on single-use plastics continue to strengthen, prompting businesses to seek environmentally friendly alternatives. Leading corporations worldwide are actively phasing out plastic waste from their supply chains, accelerating the transition to biodegradable solutions. Buyo Bioplastics is playing a pivotal role in this transformation by converting agricultural and food waste into high-quality bioplastics, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating environmental impact. Unlike conventional bioplastic manufacturers that rely on starch-based materials, Buyo’s approach harnesses organic waste streams, ensuring a more resource-efficient and sustainable production process.

Despite being a young enterprise, founded in 2022, Buyo has rapidly gained industry recognition. The company was named the champion of TECHFEST Vietnam 2023 and has since represented Vietnam at international startup competitions in South Korea, the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Europe. In 2024, Buyo is set to expand its production capacity with a new manufacturing facility in Ho Chi Minh City, increasing output tenfold to meet growing market demand. Concurrently, the company is pursuing international expansion, establishing distribution networks in key markets such as the United States and Europe. Looking ahead, Buyo plans to secure Series A funding to further accelerate its global growth and enhance product accessibility. Since its inception, the company has successfully raised approximately $750,000 in investment, positioning itself as a key player in the next generation of sustainable materials.
