Kwale Recycling Centre with The Waste Sorting and Recycling model

Kwale Recycling Centre (KRC) is a standout social enterprise model in Kenya, operating as a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO). With a dedicated team of 16 passionate young members, KRC is addressing the solid waste challenge in Kenya’s coastal region through a network of 22 public Green Stations spread across the community.

At these Green Stations, KRC implements source separation of waste, collection, and recycling of solid waste at its material recovery facility. This is a key step in building a circular economy in Kenya—where waste is not discarded but “revived” into resources for sustainable development.

Beyond collection and recycling, Kwale Recycling Centre places strong emphasis on community education. Regular awareness campaigns on waste segregation, environmental protection, and pollution reduction are organized to instill a green lifestyle across households, schools, and businesses.

In addition, KRC works closely with local authorities such as Kwale County and the City of Diani to complement existing waste management infrastructure, effectively bridging communities with the public management system. This model not only reduces the burden of waste but also creates green jobs for local youth, driving socio economic development in coastal areas.

At the P4G Summit Vietnam 2025, with the support of the National Startup Support Center (NSSC), Kwale Recycling Centre had the opportunity to showcase its Green Station model and community-based waste separation initiative in the startup exhibition zone. This not only helped KRC connect with international partners, investors, and environmental organizations but also highlighted the potential to scale its model in fast-growing urban areas worldwide, including Vietnam.

With a strong community mindset, a sustainable education strategy, and the ability to integrate with existing urban infrastructure, Kwale Recycling Centre is positioning itself as a pioneer in developing scalable and smart waste management models in Africa. It is a clear testament that a green, clean, and healthy environment can begin with small, local actions—right within the community.
